Jessica is an amazing teacher. In just 2 months I was able to go from 0 to getting a basic idea of what my friends talk about in Chinese. She tailors each lesson to the students individual needs and pace. The topics cover not only textbook material but also extensive review of modern colloquial and even internet culture in China. Jessica also focuses in making sure that you get a deep understanding of the material, from diving into etymology of the words to constantly refreshing learned material by speaking, writing and dictation. If you ever dreamed of learning Chinese she is the one and only 老师 you need:)
Jessica teaches my 8-year-old daughter in private Zoom lessons. Her lessons are well-structured, and the digital materials she uses for teaching are very helpful. She covers a good amount of material in each material but is attentive to the pace at which my daughter is learning and adjusts when necessary. Communication is also good- not only is her instruction very clear, but when we have a question for her about the material in between lessons, she reliably responds. Highly recommended!
Jessica is a great language teacher and Chinese is a fun language to learn. I have only spent about ~40 hours over the last 8 months studying Chinese but in that time I have become very comfortable reading and writing Chinese. A few things that I like about her lessons compared to other language classes I have been in: -I have spoken in person to dozens of Chinese people and Jessica is by far the best at understanding my atrocious foreigner accent. You'd be surprised how many people either don't understand or pretend not to understand if you don't get the tone exactly right. -She is very flexible with scheduling/communication. Since I am busy with work and travel this is a huge plus. -She will teach you whatever you want. Slang? Travel? Food? No problem. But if you have nothing in mind, she can draw up a suitable lesson plan. -I am pretty shy/introverted so I appreciate the relaxed environment and friendly conversation, as opposed to being in a large class.
Before I started taking classes at Bay Area Chinese Language School, I tried to learn Chinese by myself for about one year. I tried textbooks, YouTube and audiobooks. None worked well for me so I started taking Jessica's lessons. It has been about six months and I made far more progress than the previous year. For me, the most difficult thing about learning Chinese is the pronunciations. And that is where Jessica is really good at teaching. Her standard is very high and she doesn't easily say OK if it is not perfect. I think that is exactly what you need when you want to be able to speak other languages. The class is fun and she can answer any questions not only the language but other things such as Chinese culture and lifestyle. I highly recommend her to anyone who is serious about learning the Chinese language.
I've been studying Mandarin with Jessica for the past 1.5+ years and I'm very happy to meet her as my Mandarin teacher. Her lessons are able to be customized whatever I want or need (reading, listening, writing, speaking and etc.) and also she is able to cover various topics - from the fun and trendy stuffs (using comic books, YouTube and etc.) to the more in-depth and knowledgeable topics (current social issues, Chinese history and etc). In addition, she uses shared notes and lists up vocabs and grammars that we've studied together during every lesson and that is also very helpful. I would highly recommend Bay Area Chinese Language School :)
